Norse Pagans receive cemetery in Denmark
Followers of the (revived) Norse religion living in the third-largest city of Denmark, Odense, will be entitled to their own cemetery, following a decision made by the Danish authorities, writes Matthias Pöhlmann in Materialdienst der EZW (Sept. 2008). 30% of the members of the 600 people-strong movement would like to be buried, while the other ones prefer cremation.
Called Forn Sidr, the group - which was founded in 1997 - received its official state recognition in 2003. It distances itself from political forms of Norse paganism.
This is not the case with a similar venture in Germany. Pöhlmann reveals that there has been since 1958 a private pagan cemetery operating in Northern Germany, named "Ahnenstätte Conneforde", where only pagan symbols can be used. - Pictures of the German cemetery can be seen here: http://de.geocities.com/Heidenfriedhof/Ahnenstatt-Bilder.html.
Address: Materialdienst der Evangelischen Zentralstelle für Weltanschauungsfragen, Auguststrasse 80, 10117 Berlin, Germany.
